Battery damaged due to dead alternator??

The alternator in my 1988 Grand Prix died and thus discharged the battery. I am charging up the battery right now with a charger, and will install a new alternator tonight.

My question is how likely is it that the batery is damaged cause it was drained way down? How can I tell? The battery is about a year old.

What brand is it? Some batteries are not very well constructed.

Any parts store can do a load test on the battery and advise if it is good. Sure, a bad alternator can wipe out a battery---you're asking the battery to run the vehicle when the alternator dies .

It is a Sams Club battery..... forgot if its a Champion or what.

Sams Club batteries are usually crap though... they like dying after 2 to 2.5 years... learned that the hard way.

Good thing they come with a free 2 year replacement warranty, meaning I can get a new one every year and half if I feel like it.

Keep in mind that a bad BATTERY can kill an alternator too.

Makes the cheap battery seem like much less of a bargain when it wipes out a $80-$130 alternator.

Thumbs up

Very true. The cheaper batteries are also notrorious leakers and leave trails of acid stains all over .
