won't shift

I have a 1988 nissan sentra that when you put it in drive it only has first gear, and if you do it manually there is no difference. What could it be?

Mileage? Is the fluid full and clean? Last time it was changed?

Sounds like internal tranny failure---rebuild time.

thanks

thanks for your reply. I kind of figured it was internal, so I thought I should get a second opinion before I yanked it out. Thanks again ! (this site is really cool!!!)

If you put a trans in yourself be certain to flush the trans cooler or it will repeat itself.

drop the pan first and see what parts are laying in there

some other kinds of cars have a mechanical governor that can strip the plastic teeth out---resulting in no upshifting(GM!)

also might just be the governor spring popped out(2004R--GM!)

if you find nothing--it still needs another trans, which is where you are now
