volt meter buried at 18

93 lumina, 3.1 L, with volt gauge....my problem is it is buried while car is running at 18+....volt meter off the battery reads 14.4 and is constant.....any type of sensor i can replace that makes it read right? any hints? thanx, Sal....if i use door locks or windows it moves a bit....car in accessory position without running reads fine.....faulty gauge? any help would be great....

I assume you have done an alternator output test as shown in my "The Basics" below?

If so, likely a wiring or gauge problem.

Most likely the voltmeter in the dash is faulty.It would be less expensive to add an aftermarket voltmeter.I personally wouldn't worry about it because 14.4 is normal charge rate.
