90 Cutlass Ciera Starter problems

Hello All,
I have a 1990 Cutlass Ciera 4 door sedan 6 cyl. that recently has started doing something really weird. When you turn the ignition(key) it just whines. I replaced the starter solenoid and in doing so removed the starter to mount it. Even with A/c it was no problem. The book told me to pay attention to the position of the spacer, but I did not see one. After reinstalling the starter with the new solenoid it still does the same thing. If you turn the car over enough times there is a clunking noise and then iit cranks and catches. Is this the starter itself or the fact that the spacer is not there?

Sounds like a finished starter drive.

Replace the starter with an AC Delco replacement and you should be good to go. Make sure all connections are sound and tight.
