Is 17K on disc pads normal?
We had to get the pads on our Voyager replaced. They had around 17K miles on them. The shop left the old pads for us and they were rusty and had the top edges on two of the pads looked very chipped. Is this normal? It was a Chrysler shop that did both brake jobs.

That would depend on type of driving you do, plus the quality of brake pads used. Caliper functions should have been checked also rotor condition. No, "normally" 17K is pretty early to have to replace them. Have seen some pads go as long as 80K.

Also if you live in a city where you drive in alot of stop and go traffic or hilly terrain. The chipped up edge could be from where they used a screwdriver to push the caliper back to get it apart easier. Like all the other guys have said...... Life of your brakes depends solely on your driving habits and quality of parts.

Also, whats the condition of your rotors? Rough rotors will eat up a set of pads faster.
Cheap pads wear out faster, as well.
Finally, are the rear brakes adjusted and doing their share of the work? If not, the fronts are doing all the work and thus will wear out faster.
