1994 Nissan pick up starter

My '94 Nissan pick up(plain jane) has had an intermittent problem-at random intervals the starter refused to do anything. It has a standard transmission, four cylinder and I was blaming it on the switch actuated by the clutch because when it wouldn't start it acted exactly like the clutch wasn't depressed. That is to say it made no sound when the key was turned, the lights didn't go out on the dash, absolutely nothing happened. For a while bumping the key repeatedly would eventually get it to start, but now nothing works. The problem isn't the clutch switch-I both checked it and tried bypassing it. What I need to know is if there is anything else that could cause this or if I need to pull the started and rebuild the solenoid. It looks like getting the starter off is going to be a real chore. I can just barely touch the top bolt from the bottom and not at all from the top. Any help will be appreciated.

Check your ignition switch and starter circuit for problems first.

electraglide..... There is a relay on the fenderwell right next to the battery that could be the culprit. I actually found this to be a problem on my father in laws 1994 Pickup just like yours. He initially thought that the neutral safety switch was the problem. Have someone stand next to the battery and try to start it. If you hear clicking in this relay then that is probably your problem. We replaced it and he has never had anymore problems.
Hope this helps ya,
Billy
