Camry Shifter

I have an 89 camry with an automatic transaxle the problem is i'm having trouble pulling it out of park the tranny shifts fine. The brake lights are working fine. When I depress the brake pedal the button on the shifter is hard to depress when i pull it out of park. I've been able to work with it to get it into drive. Could and adjustment to the shifter linkage be corrective course of action?

If it's one of these cars where you have to press on the brake to shift out of park, look at the brake light switch closely.

Also, a schematic of the release solenoid system will help you out and determine where the fault may lie.

shifter

would the brake switch cause the thumb button on the shifter itself to be hard to push in?

It would if the system requires that you push on the brake pedal to shift into gear.

Case in point: A bad brake light switch caused this same problem on my cousin's Taurus. 10 minutes later and a new switch, no more problems.
