93 explorer 4x4

the four wheel drive on my 93 explorer will not engage. it is the push button type and when you push the button, noting happens. however sometimes at night i can see a faint glow to the indicator light but if i push it nothing changes. i had it up on a lift to replace the wheel bearings and a mechanic buddy of mine said it looked like the 4x4 was trying to engage when i push the button but would not fully engage.
any advice. i purchased the truck with this problem and the previous non-mechanically inclined owner said a dealer told him the motor that engaged the transfer case was out. i think that it is possible he just wanted to sell the truck and really dont know. i am a shade tree mechanic at best, but i am not good with electrical issues.

Most times the brushes on the shift motor get glazed and this will make the 4WD inoperative. Especially if the 4WD wasn't used much in the past.

Look around in the archives of this forum, there have been links to various pages that detail how to clean and service the brushes. Failing that, usually the motor is bad, but try cleaning the brushes first.

Thumbs up

Good for you, and you're welcome. Glad it was something simple.

That is a common problem. As I said, always start with the Basics .
