Full throttle required to start 1998 cavalier

4 cylinder 2.0l engine. You must put the pedal to the floor to start. When it starts the only way to keep running is to rev to redline and then the car runs perfectly......until the next time you start????

Could be a throttle position sensor out of adjustment. Is your Check engine light on? If so get it checked out and let us know what the codes are.

We've checked that, unless it is bad, but mostly ruled it out due to perfect performance at all other times.

Could it be a fuel filter? But then again its perfect at all other times

Something's causing it to flood and the pedal fanning is clearing this condition.

Start with my "The Basics" below.

I dont think you have a fuel filter problem. The TPS is not adjustable but it could give the symptoms you are describing.
Is this at a cold start, hot start or every start?

Original poster:

I assume you mean "1988" Cavalier and not "1998". 1998 Cavaliers had 2.2 and 2.4 engines, 1988 had 2.0 and 2.8 engines.

I have a 1989 Cavalier 2.0, pretty simple simon vehicle.
