96 Ford Escort 1.9L timing belt

Hi
I have 72K miles on my 96 Escort and want to know when the timing belt should be changed. Ford does not give a replacemnt interval. I would also like to replace it myself. Where can I find DIY information? Thanks much.

Might want to do it now along with the water pump to avoid a breakdown. You're about at the mileage.

Use autolibrary below to guide you on the R&R procedure. Failing that, pick up a service manual.

Thank you Joe_F

Thank you very much for your reply and online reference. Do you
have any insight why Ford does not give a replacement interval
for this model year? Previous Escort engines were 70K. I do know
the 96 engines were modified and are not subject to catastrophic damage when the timing belt breaks. Thanks again.

Possibly improved belt material? They may have just forgot to publish it in the OM? (Happens...lol)

Stick with whatever was done on older years, engine didn't change from 1991 to circa 1996 when it was last used.
