Unhappy ac compressor pulley

i have a 1996 pontiac grand am 2.4 4 cyl. i am getting a grinding noise from the front of the ac compressor and metal shavings are visable in the pulley/clutch. can the pulley be replaced on this or the bearing or is it easier to replace the whole compressor?

this is usually caused when the a/c compressor tries to lock up causing the front pulley and clutch plate to get very hot to fix it, it will need a new or remanufactured compressor with clutch, accumulator and orfice tube replaced at minimum and may need the a/c system flushed also. this is something you should have a shop do as they have to reclaim any freon in the system flush if needed and replace the components and pull a vacum on the system before refilling with freon.
