89 Chevy 1500 pickup won't idle

My brother's got an 89 Chevy 1500 pickup that will not idle. Any suggestions will be a great help!

Maintenance history? What's been checked? Mileage? Engine size? etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.

Start with my "The Basics" and also autolibrary.org below.

i had a similiar problem with my same year truck.chased this around for a long time. in my case it was the gasket between the throttle body and intake leaking.
just a thought.

had an 89

I also had an 89 but it was a 3/4 ton with a C6P package(H/D).
do you have a check engine light if you do pull the code you can do it on a 89 with a cheap code scanner or a paper clip.
It could be lots of things mine had that problem 2 times one was a throttle position sensor and then a few years later the coolant temp sensor went south. When the coolant sensor went out it would not idle or run right it would run rich and belch black smoke out the exhaust.
