water pump removal

I have a 97 olds Achieva, and i need to put a water pump in. Does anyone know the best way to do this. Timing chain cover is hard to get to, to loosen the tensioner on the timing chain.

Can't help much if we don't know the engine size....

Use autolibrary.org or a good service manual to guide you.

If he's talking about a timing chain tensioner, he must have a Quad 4.

If it's a quad 4, that timing must not only be loosened, it needs to be removed. You will need the famed ' special tools' to do this job, as the camshafts need to be aligned after ward. They're also a couple of designs to the chain tensioner to be aware of.
Anyway, to get at the timing chain cover, you must disconnect the motor mounts on the passenger side of the engine, and put a jack under the oil pan to elevate the passenger side of the engine. I have seen where guys will just about have the engine at 45 degree angle, and makes working inthat area not bad at all. I am not sure but I think the exhaust manifold might need to be removed or at least the heat shield that surrounds it.
Any pontiac guys out there know for sure?
