check engine

My car is a 1997 Ford Explorer Sport, 6cyl, SOHC,4x2. The fault read "overdrive band failed off" and "gear 2 incorrect ratio." Is this a DIY or should I have it done by a pro? Thanks for any advice.

if you need to ask.....then you know the answer.

if nobody with ford specific advice chimes in, i'd get a few estimates from a few different types of repair places, hopefully it's just a sensor or solenoid problem, or even a wire problem.

my limited experience with 'chain' type trans places is to first replace the trans and if that doesn't fix it, then take it to the dealer and mark their bill up a certain percent, then give it back to the customer and here's you bill.

shop around

There are good and bad tranny chains, independents, dealers and just about everyone in the auto food service chain.

My opinion: You'd be miles ahead with an FQR Ford tranny if that is what the prognosis is. Sounds like it's wasted inside. When was the last time it saw service?
