Starter problems

1974 Lincoln Continental, installed new starter and starter-relay, when i put voltage to the battery, the starter instantly turns over until i disconnect the battery. what wire would cause a direct voltage to the starter from the battery. Question: does the hot lead from the battery and the wireharness connection attach to the same side of the starter relay???

the positive cable from the battery goes to one side of the solenoid with the wire harness connections, the other side of the solenoid has the cable leading to the starter. the small wire terminal that energizes the solenoid usually push on or could be bolt on the solenoid terminal comes from the ignition switch.
