no instrument lights

1978 Mustang II, 302 V8 A/T
Only had this car about 3 1/2 weeks...the instrument lights weren't on the first time I drove it at night, but one night they came on for a couple minutes and have been off ever since. The high beam indicator worked, though. Then it quit. Now it works again. The lights for the a/c, radio, etc. work, however, I need to read my speedometer and tachometer! Someone put in an after-market radio, which sounds awful (fuzzy?), and the when I honk the horn, it sounds like it has an awful cold. I changed fuses, no help. I feel like there is a short somewhere, but I'm no electrician. Any ideas? BTW, this is a TERRIFIC site! Thanx....

Check the radio installation. It is likely the root of the problem.

Undo the "Mastery" done by that installation and put the wires back to OEM configuration. The problem will likely go away.

Most people should never touch wiring like that, most of those installs people do cause more problems than help.
