Towing with the Explorer
I just purchased a really nice 1999 Explorer with a V8 and all-wheel drive. I will be towing a 3,000 lb boat and wonder how it will do. I am sure that there is enough engine but how about the 4-speed automatic tranny and the all-wheel drive system?
Is there any special maintenance I should be doing and should I be watching for any problems? Should I keep it out of overdrive when towing? Hopefully this rig is tuff enough.
Any informed opinions would be appreciated.

The owners manual should list the maintenance intervals for your vehicle.I would use the severe usage catagory.I also would change the transmission fluid/filter,transfer case fluid(Ford specs)front and rear differential if it has any amount of miles on it and flush the cooling system. You may want to add a external trans cooler unless equipped from the factory with one.

Not to suggest that you'll ever break down, but if you ever need to have your Explorer towed be sure to inform the towing company that it is all-wheel drive. They're not very common and it will avoid them showing up with a wheel-lift truck.
