transmission

Hi, I have a 96 Plymouth Voyager with a 3 liter engine. The transmission will not shift to overdrive until reaching 50 mph. It also downshifts about the same speed. When shifting it has a high rpm and kicks in hard. I checked the fluid and it is fine. I'm sure it's internal but might it be something I could handle on my own. Thanks for your help, Don

I suggest a trans shop drive it, most trans repairs are not diy in my opinion.Special tools are generally required and are not cheap. You may have a throttle valve linkage adjustment you could check I'm not positive though on your van,you could also have the codes checked for electrical failure of a solenoid.

let's identify the trans first.

does the shift indicator in the instrument cluster have a standard "D", with a red 'slide' piece behind it?

or does it have a "D" with a circle around it (an OD), which may even be an electronic display?

That sounds like a regular 3 speed, without OverDrive. When was the last time it was serviced?

It was rebuilt this in May. Maybe it's not overdrive, but it is not going in to high gear until 50 mph. I will take it back to the mechanic. I just thought I would get some ideas before going back. Thanks, Don

either the
1. throttle pressure rod is sticking on the rusty ball, or the spring is missing (the rod from the throttle body to the trans)

2. the governor is sticking

3. the trans wasn't assembled exactly correct (and has prematurely failed)

1 you can fix
2+3 you can't
