trunk release

1996 Nissan Sentra----about a year ago the trunk release next to drivers seat didn't open the trunk---I opened trunk with key looking for cable, didn't see one but saw something like a little electric device.Does this car trunk open with that part?NOW,key won't open trunk.Key unlocks doors, works in the ignition.Sprayed WD-40 into key opening BIG time.Do locksmiths have key codes for cars?Once again thanks ahead of time!!!!!!!!!!!!

That small motor/solonoid thing you saw was probably the elec trunk latch activator. But the key should work unless there is a linkage off inside the trunk or some have a short incased cable that runs from the key mechanism to the latch device, this may be off or seized up. Worked on an older chrysler some time back, same problem, ended up removing back seat to unlatch the trunk.

one more thing you can try is push on trunk lid at the latch area while trying to unlock it. If this does by chance work, use white lithium grease on the latch assembly. People usually fail to grease these, the hood latch and door hinge area. They need period maint. like everything else.

You dont need to get a new key made because if the key works in the other locks then the problem is not the key it is the trunk latch. Try Darrells suggestions and report back and we can go from there.
