Sounds like a cluster problem. You will have to take it to a dealer and have a new one programmed and installed.

perhaps a speed sensor?

not unusual for speed sensors to go bad on these....and i don't think that they are too pricey...how about it mike? I'd check on a price for that...i'm not much on throwing parts at problems but if it's cheap enough, it might be worth it to you to try one before taking it to the dealer to have it checked...they're pretty easy to change

To validate the possibility of a speed sensor...... Do you have a check engine light on? Does the car run and drive ok?

it sure would help US to know what engine and trans you have, this way we can help YOU!

it could be a sensor, depends on the trans type. could be a cluster, could be a wire

does it shift correctly, check engine light on?

we have done quite a few sensors in the last 2 years or so (an understatement)

Mike... Amen to that..... We had a hard time keeping them in stock when I worked at the dealership. There were weeks when I had to order them 2 or 3 times and sometimes still ran out and had to go to the dealer across town to get 1.
