pontiac tempest

I have a 91 pontiac tempest with air. The air compressor froze on me and instead of fixing the pump i got a new fan belt that ignored the pulley. Now the motor runs on high idle and we can't get it to kick down.

The only other thing that went wrong around the same time was a gas leak on the return line.

Anyone got any ideas please help?

I don't have a schematic in front of me but I have seen this problem before. I found the idle control circuit grounds through the compressor. If you have removed the compressor and the wires, that's likely your problem. Find the wire that used to ground to the compressor and ground it to the block. That should work.
