Question 94 ply acclaim eng noise when at stop

For a long time now, when I stop for a red light or at a drive thru my engine makes a loud noise. People stop and do a double take to see where the loud noise is coming from. It last about 10 0r 20 seconds and then it sounds normal again. It mostly happens when the car has not been runnubg long, although occasionally it will do even it if I've been driving all day. Any thought on what is causing this. Thanks for any help or advice.

It's not a thumping or banging. Closer to a squealing noise but not a squeal. Maybe a little similar to a revving noise but not quite that either. Sorry I can't do better tahn that. I think the people outside the car can hear it better and louder than I can if that helps any ANd it seems to be coming from under the hood.

Probably a belt or tensioner. May even be a water pump. First thing to do id open the hood and see if anything looks odd. With the car running and without. Post back and let us know.

Strong Gas Smell

I have a 1996 Chevy Cavalier. 2.2 Liter standard transmission. Lately I have noticed a strong gas odor. A friend suggested that my fuel injectors might have a leak. Is this something real that happens. It doesn't overheat but has been using oil more then it used to. Any ideas?
