Starter

I'm looking into replacing the starter on my car, 1995 Kia Sephia. I was wondering about the relationship between the starter and the colinoid (sp?). My understanding is that these are two seperate parts. When I remove the starter, does the colinoid come out with it, or do I need to remove that seperately? And when I purchase a new starter, do I need to purchase the colinoid seperately? Also, what tests should I have run on these parts to make sure that is the problem? Whne I try and start my car, nothing happens. The lights come on, but the engine doesn't turn over, nor even attempt to turn over.

Could be the starter, or could be the battery. Take a hammer and rap on the starter gently. See if it will start now. If it does then the starter is gone. Replace it. The new starter will come with a new "solenoid" attached. No need to remove it from the old one. Other than that you didnt give us any particulars of your car so we really cant delve into it much more than that.
Hope this is helpful to ya,
Billy

I actually replaced the battery and the radiator a week or two ago. When I tried to fire up the engine nothing happened, so I had my brother in law help out. He tried touching the starter with the metal part of a scew driver (everything is packed in under the hood, so it is hard to reach the starter from the top) and it still didn't turn over. It made some noise, but it didn't turn over. It's a small engine, 1.6 L, 4 cylinder, automatic transmission.

Another quick question. When I'm checking prices, I see a price mentioned, and then it will say core with another amount. Is the core seperate that I have to purchase, or is this a refund when you return the old starter?

You didnt have any problems before replacing the radiator and battery? What kind of noise did it make?
The core charge is a price you pay and then get refunded when you return the old starter.

The car stopped running about a year ago, most likely due to the problem with the starter. I wasn't sure if it was just a dead battery or something else, and I had been having a problem with the radiator leaking before the car stopped running, so I figured I'd replace the battery and radiator and go from there. So I replaced the battery and the radiator (the other battery was old and dead) and then when the car still didn't do anything I started trying to figure out what was still wrong with it. When my brother in law tried to get it to start by touching it with the srewdriver it made a kind of grinding noise. I don't have ramps, and my car is really low to the ground (I could barely get far enough under to detach the hoses so I could pull out the radiator) and after doing all that I was tried and frustrated, so I decided to take a break from working on the car.
Now I'm looking into get a new vehicle, which I've wanted to do anyways, and want to get the car running so I can trade it in. From researching, I think I can get a starter pretty cheap, and I have a coworker I can borrow ramps from, but I am concerned with making sure I get everything I need part wise and I'm not sure if I will be able to reach the starter from underneath the car. I sure can't replace it from the top. I can't even touch, although I can see it. The Sephia is Kia's small economy car, which the replaced with the Rio, I believe, in '99 or '00. It is comparable in size to a Toyota Echo or a Ford Escort.
