Changing a thermostat in a Cavalier

I am changing a thermostat in a 1997 Cavalier. The thermostat is located in one of two positions - either right next to the water pump, or about 6 inches away from the pump, where a radiator hose connects to a metal part that in turn connects to the pump. Does anyone know which is the location of the thermostat? Thanks.

You should be able to follow the upper radiator hose back toward the engine to find the thermostat.

We can't answer your questions if you don't tell us what your working engine size

The car is a 1997 Cavalier coupe, with a 2.2L engine. Also, at the point where the radiator hose meets the engine block, there is a stamp on the housing that advises the thermostat is located at the water pump. So, it is not at the classic location where most thermostats are located. But there are two possibilities near the water pump - either right next to pump itself or a little removed from the pump where the other radiator hose connects. ?? Thanks.

Looks to me like you just answered your own question. It should be right by the water pump.

Dont just use any gasket handy, I would use an O.E.M. gasket on that.

On your car the thermostat is in the outlet that the lower hose connects to at the engine.Drain your coolant first to avoid a mess.
