Question Fuel Management

I have a 2000 Ford Contour w/2.0L 4cyl. In order for it to start I must spray starter fluid into the air intake box. It idiles very poorly and if you just touch the accelerator, it shuts off. The plugs are very very carbonized/sutty. The OBD II code is 171 which indicates an oxygen sensor.
Could this be the problem with my engine.

Any suggestions is appreciated Big Time..

Thanks

The PO171 code doesn't indicate an oxygen sensor, it indicates that the oxygen sensor is seeing lean exhaust. The first thing you need to do is check your fuel pressure at the fuel rail. If that is at spec then you have to look elsewhere. Next look real good for a large vacuum leak. Listen for a hissing noise. Does it have a Mass air flow sensor? If so, try unplugging it to see if there is any improvement. This will set a code and put on a check engine light but don't worry about that for now. If it gets much better unplugged, that's your problem. Replace it and clear the codes.
