i have replaced my alternator in my van because the charging light was on in the vehicle. i have tested everything with a meter and i have 12 volts at back of alternator . i also have a continuity from wire that hooks up to battery lead on aternator to the battery which would indicate that it is good but i still have a flashing light on dash indicating that i have a charging sysytem fault any information you can tell me will be greatly appreiciated....

How many volts across the battery terminals with the engine running?Should be 13.5 to 14.7 if not maybe the new alternator is faulty.Did you have the original tested? Also I hope you didn't buy an el cheapo alternator meaning the house brand from a chain store. My nephew is a manager at a chain store and told me to never buy the alternator or starter that is the house brand, only buy AC Delco reman.

If you are getting just 12 volts at the alternator then thats not enough. You should be getting an average of about 14.4 volts at the big post of the alternator with the engine running. Check the cable going to the battery and alternator for fusible links. Check the voltage on the wire before and after the links.
Hope this is helpful to ya,
