Pulling out lifters

Anyone know of an easy way to get well varnished and gunked up lifters out of an Olds 350 besides pulling the motor and working from the bottom?

I tried a lifter pulling tool from NAPA that grips the snap ring groove but the base of the lifters is just to gunked up.

Thanks Mike

You can try really soaking them with something like WD40 or carb cleaner. It just really takes time to work them loose. Once you get them to lift a little you can grab them with vise grips around the side (they won't scratch) and work them loose.
