Charging System?

Hi,

I have a 1988 Camaro, 305 TBI, Vin E. 100A alternator

My alternator went south last week...after only a year and a half. I decided to change the battery at the same time. Here's what I have now:

12V at the battery w/car off
14.3V at the battery w/car on (initial startup)
13.6V after driving for about 1/2 hr - Steady decline until 13.6 levels out
13.1V with A/C on and driving

My question is: Does it sound like something is sapping my alternator and thereby causing an early failure? If so, what would be the most likely source of the problem?

Thanks!

Maitai

no problem

From what I see it looks good charging is normal. It does 14.3 to recharge then once charged evens out.Looks good to me.

I agree with Michael the voltages look fine. Are you installing A/C Delco remanufactured alternators or something else?

yes, AC Delco.......any theory on why the old alternator crapped out after a year and a half?

Thank you for your time in replying to my post!!

Are you using your car to help start other cars with dead batteries? If not maybe you just got a bad alternator. That is very rare for A/C Delco remans that I've seen.I think you should be fine now.

Those alternators are very sensitive. They made be rated at 100 A but if you charge anywhere near that rate they will crap out. That means no jump starting other cars. If your battery gets very low, use a battery charger and not the car to bring it back.
