iI'm trying to replace the rear brakes on my 1997 geo prizm and can't get the hubs off.
Is there a special tool I need?

That car has slide-off drums. They can and do freeze to the hubs, and many times a solid smack with a hammer on the outside edge of the drum will pop them loose. Try shooting some WD40 around the lug stud holes and the center of the drum where it slides over the drum first. If the brakes are grinding (metal-to-metal), the procedure will become a bit more difficult.

The above is correct if the drums are not moving in relation to the studs. But if the drums are moving a little on the studs but just will not come off, the shoes have worn into the drum surface. In this case you will have to turn the adjuster star wheel to retract the shoes. You usually have to punch out an oval shaped indentation in the drum or the backing plate. It can be tricky because it is almost impossible to see in through the hole and you often have to push the adjuster arm away from the star wheel with an ice pick etc. so you can turn the adjuster with a screw driver. They make a brake adjuster that is bent at a different angle on each end to make the adjusting easier. The ends both look similar to a standard screwdriver blade. Then buy a plug at the auto store to keep dirt, sand etc from getting in the hole. Before self adjusting brakes all cars came with the hole already there and a removable plug in the hole.

The adjuster on this car is on top, directly under the wheel cylinder. It already has an access plug in the backing plate under and a little behind the cylinder. The adjuster rides inside the return spring, and the adj. lever is mounted on the backside of the shoes, towards the backing plate. It's easier to adjust down (loose), than up (tight). Simple rule: if it's backside, turn it counterclockwise to loosen. If it's frontside, towards the drum, turn it clockwise to loosen. If it's mounted on the drum side of the shoes, that's where you'll require a pick of some sort to pull the lever off of it in order to turn it.
