automotive HVLP spray gun problems

I have an inexpensive HVLP spray gun and I get a striped effect when I spray with it. I have been overlapping 50%. Is it the gun or do I need more overlap.?I sprayed a solvant onto cardboard and as it evaporated it was clearly heavy top and bottom and sparce in between.About a 25% section on top, A sparce area about 50% in the center and a heavy stripe about 25% on the bottom. top and bottom stripes were equal. Any help would be good. Ken

Ken:

If it did this from when new I would first carefully go over the operating instructions and if everything is being done correctly I would return it.
Maybe try the paint a bit thinner.

If it once worked properly then maybe the nozzle/gun is dirty or something is damaged.
