1998 Chevy Malibu - Security

Every once in a while (with no warning), upon turning the ignition, the security light will flash. The car will not start for at least 5-10 minutes until the system resets. I guess it thinks I'm trying to steal it. Is there some way to reset this?

This is not an added-on security system. It is the built-in anti-theft device.

Does your ignition key have the little black plastic and wire in it where it goes in the ignition? If so, take a small screwdriver and pry it out just a bit.

First of all, thanks for your reply Billy.
The key does not have a chip in it. It is a classic double-sided key.

most likely...

...it has stored a trouble code in the body computer memory for that intermittant problem. just by your description it sounds like the problem occurs just when you rotate the lock cylinder (there's a hall effect switch in it) and they have had some problems with those. the best thing is to have the dealer scan it and go from there.
