96 grand am power windows
96 grand am power windows, drivers side, works when it wants to and is very slow, all other windows operate fine from all switches. Suspect it is the window motor brushes worn being the window that is used most. Cost is 184.00 Any alternatives? Thanks

cost
Is that the cost installed?Seems Gm used the lowest bidder on window moters that year my 96 Bucik has the same problem I bet that your 96 Pontiac and my 96 Buick have them from the same vendor.
There is no other way but replacment I have tried to lube the tracks but that did not help.

Loose rivets?
I see no reason they would leave loose rivets a rivet is a one piece fastner unless it is a pull rivet. To install a rivet you put it in the hole and squezze nothing falls off.
I think it might have been replaced before and drilled out and then the rivets left behind.

98 Venture P/W Alignment Problem
Searching the posts I came accross this one and didn't want to start a new thread on a simular subject. In any case my Venture drivers window has been out of alignment and "WARANTY" I took the car back to the dealer 6 times for this problem. Fortunately they only charged me once. They aligned the window 5 times and then the last time I called they ordered a regulator for it. On the 6th time they installed the power window regulator and aligned the window. Well this adjustment lasted 3 weeks and now the problem is even worse than when I started this whole mess.
Can anyone explain how I can align the window myself? I have aligned and also replaced broken windows on some of my older cars back in the day but they were all manual. Once I get the door panel off, I have no idea what I will be getting into. I do not want to pay for this job again though and feel I can't do any more damage than what I currently have so I want to try myself first before shelling out more dough.
Thanks for all your responses in advance.
Regards,
Doug

If the dealer is having that many problems, what makes you think you can do something they can't. Someone is obviously missing something in there that is worn, misaligned or bent. It's still the dealer's problem. Bring it back to them.
On the subject of AutoZone window motors, the fact that they generate sales by giving a lifetime gaurantee definately does not mean the part is higher quality, in fact it is likely much LOWER quality. That is nothing but a marketing technique. The labor to install that motor is worth more than the motor itself. Why do it twice as often? Discount auto parts dealers make their profit by cutting costs with lower quality. On a part like that, no one will be selling a higher quality part than the dealer.

With regard to the dealer, I think 6 attempts to fix something is long enough and it shows me that their techs have no more knowledge than my back yard abilities. The down time without the car has created a severe burden. By doing it myself I can leave it apart while using the transportaion and continue to adjust it until I get it right. I never liked dealer mechanics as a whole. Independents have to be much more capable in order to keep food on the table. The dealership can rely on sales to cover some inabilities. At this point I don't want to hit my pockets anymore so attempting this myself will cost nothing more than my time.
Other opinions still welcomed.

Bad mouthing technicians is not going to do any thing but hinder the help you need to fix your car.I have worked at independents for 23 yrs.I now work at a dealer. Some of the other guys on here are the same some are reverse but most of the regular posters are professional Automotive Technicians that have taken more training and testing than your doctor or surgeon has.Backyard folks can't even begin to understand our job responsibilities so don't try or bother to feed us the BS.Not to many people could jump in my shoes and do my job you included. On the other hand give me a week and I could do alot of other peoples jobs.If you really want your window to work replace the regulator, possibly the motor and have the local dealer give you a copy of bulletin #00-08-64-007.I would not have that bulletin if I were not a GM dealership technician.Btw most aftermaket(indie)techs make more money because they don't have to do warranty work which is at about half pay.Do you do work for free?Or half your regular wage? You will have to hit your pockets to fix your car because it is not just an adjustment.Every one that answers post questions does so for free on here.I would ask that you respect the technicians for donating their time to help you and others.

My APOLOGIES...Please accept them everyone!!! I was speaking out of turn and in total frustration with my local dealer. I have had nothing but problems with this Chevy dealership service department. I have other GM dealers in the area but since they are not Chevy's they wouldn't do warranty work and now because this dealer started the work they won't correct it without billing me. If it was fixed right the first time I would not have blinked twice at the cost, but now not only starting over again, I have also had to rent a car six times without reimbursement while they had mine for those days. That is $180.00 + the $235.00 in the original service charges. This is what has hurt the pocket and what I vented from when it was suggested to take it back again. I hope someone would be willing to provide me with a copy of the bulletin #00-08-64-007. AGAIN I apologize for my prior statements, they were truly ment for my local dealership experience. I did not mean to offend the good folks here, because I have used the information from this forum for many years and it has always been great and professional.
