sticking auto trans!!!!!!
My used 1994 Volvo 850 turbo with 149,000 miles has been getting stuck in first gear - and it is an automatic. If I put it in park and give it a 'rest' it eventually drives beautifully. Is this a sign I need a new transmission -? I just had all my brake pads, timing belt, oil change, and new battery done and the mechanic said the engine was ' very good' and should last me for years. Am I in car trouble? Is this going to be expensive? Any feedback is great - thanks!

it may be...
...that you have some valves sticking in the valve body (the brain of the transmission). this may indicate impending failure due to small particle contamination from a component that is wearing out (an inevitability with all automatics) or it may be from lack of regular maintenance. how often does the tranny fluid and filter get changed/exchanged. exchanging the fluid is superior because it keeps the tranny cleaner inside. in any event...the problem will likely worsen with time...what you can do now is have someone drop the oil pan on the transmission and inspect the fluid and especially the filter for small particles and fluid condition. if the fluid is nasty, it's demise is coming sooner rather than later. but if the fluid hasn't been changed recently and is still clean...it's probably repairable without a complete overhaul...the bottom line is to find someone familiar with that trans and have then evaluate it for you.
