4x4 problems for 96 ford ranger

When I engage the four wheel drive, it feels like my locking hubs dont not hold. As they rotate to lock, they make a snapping sound and don't engage. I need to know an inexpensive way to fix this problem and where to start.

You would need to take them apart and check them. They can be damaged if when you pull a wheel and the hub comes off and isn't put back on correctly. The hubs when installed must be 100% flush withe rotor or damage occurs very common. It takes a few tries to get them in the right spot. Some of the parts are plastic also.Take it to some mud or gravel and see if a front tire spins when you floor it.

Thanks DAVO for the reply. Could the locking mechanism be stripped. I want to say the notch on the rotating piece of metal is worn down. Do you know of any inexpensive books I can refer to.
