Heat/Air conditioner will run on high only

My wife has a 2000 Mercury Villager. The other day when she went to turn on the air conditioner, it wouldn't come on. She turned it to the second and third notch, still nothing. Finally on the last and highest setting it came on. I checked the heat and it is doing the same thing. Can anyone give me some insight about this problem? Is this a "do it yourself situation" or am I looking at costly repairs.

Sounds like a resistor problem, But without looking at the schematic I couldn't tell you for sure. The resistor controls all speeds except high typically.

Maybe somebody else will come along with specfic knowledge of this vehicle

True, sounds like a resistor or switch but more likely the resistor.
