Brake growl on a '96 Ford Ranger

Just replaced the brakes on a '96 Ford Ranger, front (disc) and rear (drum). Right away they start growling. I figured maybe because they were new and gave them awhile to seat. It never stopped so I took them off again and can find no sign of anything wrong.
Somebody told me this is an inherent problem with Rangers, but didn't tell me what the fix is. I'm using medium priced Auto-Zone parts. I've had just as many people tell me the pads are too soft as ones that tell me the pads are too hard.
I've been changing brakes on my vehicles for years (many different models) and have never had this happen before. Any ideas?

Lower quality brake linings have caused many a noise complaint. If you are sure everything is installed properly live with it or install higher quality brake components.
