Check guages light flashing

My neighbor has a 1993 pontiac Grand Am. Her "check guages" light is flashing, and the "oil pressure" light is flashing. The oil pressure is very good on the guage, but the needle jumps a bit. I haven't had time to check actual pressure with a real guage, but I am convinced it has ample pressure. I wanted to ask around to see if maybe this was a fairly common occurrence and if so, what causes it. (I looked at it at the roadside for just a few minutes, and haven't had the time to do any checking other than telling her it should be fine to drive after listening to the engine under different conditions). I am thinking bad oil pressure sending unit or bad connection on it. I'm just not accustomed to these lights flashing. I'm used to a light just coming on. Anyone seen this before?

When you get to checking make sure the alternator is charging.I know it doesn't sound right but the alt can make that check guage system go nuts.
