ignition coils

have a 2000 toyota corolla and being not so mechanically inclined on todays newer cars thought that I would change the spark plugs and wires and such but found that engine has ignition coils on top of the valve cover and no wires or cap what is the purpose of these coils compared to plugs and how do I replace them the engine has 80.000 miles or do I need to replace them at all

Thanks

That's called a "coil on plug" system. It is becoming quite common on late models. They are a little more of a pain to change plugs but nowadays plugs will last nearly 100K. the coils require no maintanance until they have a problem. Then you just replace the bad one.
