Compressor Dryer

I have a 1994 Full size G20 Chevy conversion van and I was told by a dealer last month that the van needs a compressor dryer. what is that ? and what is the cost for one to install myself.

I would suspect what he said was it needs a compressor AND a dryer. The compressor speaks for itself. The dryer, also known as an accumulator when on oriface tube systems like yours, is a desicant drying agent in a can like component. It is a good idea to change that whenever the system is opened to the atmosphere.

this isn't a good DIY'er job...

...considering that the refrigerant needs to be collected (assuming it has any in it, of course) and then once the parts are installed correctly, the system will need to be evacuated and charged using specialized equipment. evacuation is necessary to remove all moisture prior to charging and charging requires a precise amount of refrigerant to be put into the system.
