muffler, up front

Hey, sounds like my muffler has a hole in it. But it is up front. While driving I can hear the noise below and in front of me. I looked under the car the other day and didn't see anything coming off. Looks like part of the pipe is worn down. The front section that is wrapped in a patchwork fiber kind of pattern. Can I replace or fix that part myself?

while you have the car idling, have someone stuff a big rag in the tailpipe and hold it there. then you can look at the exhaust and see exactly what is leaking.

that flex portion of the exhaust you mentioned can be replaced cheaply by any competant muffler shop, provided the rest of the pipe is weldable(not overly rusted), they can usually make a good judgement of that just by looking at it.

your other option is to replace the entire pipe, which might cost more in parts than the flex joint professionally installed.
