1995 Beretta acceleration problem

My buddies' 95 Beretta, with 125,000 miles, won't accelerate past 70 mph any more. When doing approximately 70, if he presses the accelerator, engine rpm's don't increase, the trans doesn't downshift, etc. He's had the engine and transmission checked by several mechanics with no problems found. Any ideas what the problem may be?

Try dropping the exhaust. You may have a plugged cat.
