Chevy Jimmy leak

We have a 1995 Chevy Jimmy SUV that has 100,000 miles. This weekend we noticed a brownish/oil material leaking from the back of the vehicle, apparently from the back axle area. Any ideas on what could be leaking? We would like to be somewhat knowledgeable when we take this to the mechanic for repair.

Thanks in advance!

It depends exactly where you saw it leaking from. Most likely you have a bearing that let go and in turn has ruined a seal. If it's in the center of the rear axle, it's probably a bad pinion bearing. Were you feeling any vibration under acceleration or growling noises?
