Car is jumping when I press on gas

I have 1998 Ford Escort. About a year ago it started to "jump" (as if running out of gas) when I pressed on the gas going between 30-40 mph. It has gradually gotten worse and now it is realling "jumping" regardless of the speed. It doesn't do it ALL the time, but quite often. i.e., When going from a dead stop, I press on the gas, car does nothing, then a few sudden jerks and I'm finally going.

I had a new fuel pump put in it about 2.5 years ago. Any thoughts on what this is? I am quite inept with automotive repair, but my limited insticts on this tell me it is possible a clogged fuel pump?

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. That's what I figured, mainly (as noted) when I go heavy on the gas it studders.

Can anyone provide me with a ballpark estimate for what should expect to pay for part and how long it should take to put on (by a pro)?

Filters run about $15 and you're looking about 1/2 hour labor tops.
