1985 Jeep Cherokee...Timing Problem???

When my hubby first starts his 85 Jeep Cherokee Chief (2.5L Automatic) it splutters and carries on awful. Sounds like it is out of time but after it warms up it smooths out and runs fine.
He has listened under hood and heard one of those relays up front making weird sounds. After the relay makes the sound the motor smooths out. We don't know what the relay goes to.
Any ideas.................Thanks!!

You'll have to identify what relay is doing that. It may be the fuel pump or ASD relay. Either of which would make it run bad or not at all. Don't touch the timing if nobody has messed with it already. It won't move by itself. You may also have some ignition problems with plugs or wires with those symptoms. Also make sure you have no vacuum leaks.
