Vaporlock?

I have a 2000 Suzuki Esteem. The check engine light is on. I recently had trouble filling the tank on three consecutive tries. The pump would click off as if the tank were already full. That problem has gone away and the check engine light went out for a few days, but it is back on. I had replaced a lost gas cap before the trouble started. Any ideas on why the check engine light is still on? How do I make it go out?

Thanks.

Your going to have to get the codes read and we'll have to take it from there. That light can mean any of about 200 different things. If you take it to any AutoZone they will read it for free but don't let them sell you anything. Post the code numbers here and we'll advise you. In the meantime, make sure you bought the right gas cap and it is on tight. It need's to be "non vented".

The codes that I got from auto zone are: P0451 and P0455.
He reset the the system yesterday after he got the codes. I've driven about fifty miles since then and the light has not come back on. Do I need to be concerned?

P0451 - EVAP Emission Control System Pres Sensor Range
P0455 - EVAP Emission Control System Leak (Large)

Sounds like it could be the gas cap.

It's a problem with the gas tank vapor recovery system. A gas cap is possible. Are you sure you bought the correct cap for the car? If it sets again, have it diagnosed.

PS If you drove without one before replacing it, that could have done it.

If it is the gas cap. Will the light go out after replacing it. Or will I need to have it reset?

It will go out eventually but it will store a code in the computer. You should have it reset to know for sure if the problem is gone.
