Speedo & cruise control out. Why?

My speedometer and odometer stopped working. One minute fine, stopped for gas, not working. I thought about related systems and found that the cruise control is also non-functioning. I checked for blown fuses and found all to be intact. Any suggestions for a simple fix or diagnosis

This is a 1999 Ford Ranger XLT PU w/3.0L engine. Manual transmission, 2WD. Milage = 95600.

Thank you in advance

The speedo is the source of the problem. The cruise control needs a speedometer to work. Your speedo may be cable driven or electronic or both. I don't remember which that vehicle is. Look at the tailshaft of the trans and see if there is a cable or just wires coming off it. Is the check engine light on? If it's electronic, then probably bad speed sensor.
