Transmission Help!! Please Look!

I have a 1995 Saturn SL2 (automatic Transmission) and it has major transmission problems. When I am driving sometimes when I am around 35-45 mph it will kick into a lower gear and my RPMs will shoot up. It will stay like this for a while and then shift into a high gear. Also sometimes when this happens my engine light in my dashboard will light up ( Service Engine Soon is what the light says.) Please Help me out this problem is VERY Annoying . Thanks in Advance to any1 and every1!

First step is to get a good transmission technician to hook up a scan tool and see what diagnostic codes are stored in the onboard computer. That will tell him where to look.

Although I'm not intimately familiar with the Saturn transmission, it could be as simple as a shift solenoid or as complex as a complete overhaul.
