Outer Tie Rod

What can you tell me about the outer tie rod. Dealers says one is loose. Does both need to be replaced at the same time. Alignment??? Does this part affect performance...how long is it good for before I HAVE to get it replaced???

Thanks.

First, you need to list year, make, and model.

Tie rods are part of the steering linkage. No, you don't necessarily have to replace both (or all 4). Replacement will require an alignment, not sure what you mean about "performance." It will affect handling and tire wear. No one here has the ability to tell you how long before you HAVE to replace it. If it has play, take care of it. Just remember - a broken tie rod means no steering.

And a loose one means worn tires.

Al J,
You're not accepting pm's.
The only time I might recommend replacing them as a pair would be same side - inner and outer, if the inner was in very bad shape. Play in the inner can damage the outer over time. In my experience, Ford vehicles are especially susceptible to tie rod wear.
