You probably have a wear indicator touching the rotor if the noise stops when you apply the brakes. If so it is warning you that you need to replace the brake pads soon, before you tear up the rotors.
The ABS light should come on as a check when you start the car but it should not be on when you are driving the car. You need to get the codes pulled from the onboard computer and see what is wrong.

You might also check the brake fluid level in the reservoir, but check the pad wear first; if you need new pads the fluid level will go back up some when you compress the pistons in the calipers to install the new pads.

The brake fluid becomes most contaminated at the calipers or wheel cylinders because they are subject to the highest swings in temperature because of the heat generated during braking. Normally this fluid stays there and the only risk is a leaky caliper or wheel cylinder.
The ABS units are said to be very sensitive to contaminated fluid so when you let the fluid go back to the master cylinder it can then get into the ABS unit during ABS operation and over time cause early ABS problems.
Some manufacturers such as Honda have recomended brake fluid replacement every 2-3 years as preventive maintainence in non ABS systems to prevent master cylinder and caliper/wheel cyl. leaks. Few people do this but with ABS systems as you know the cost can be huge for ABS repair/replacement. I feel it is now even more important with ABS as preventive maintenance. Those who do not change their brake fluid and keep their cars long enough may wish they had changed it.
