1988 VW Fox w/ carb will not start, turns over, fuel smell inside car, mileage approx 200,000 miles, starting problems since 3 weeks, has run until now, new plugs & wires, plus are wet. dist. suspect, oil at base where it goes into block.

Crank/no start, wet plugs, fuel smell, no fire..............

You need to get a spark tester and see if you're getting a good spark at the plugs and go from there.

You also need to check your timing belt if equipped and make sure it's not broken.

pop cap on distributor it turns so is it safe to say timing belt is not broken?
is grounding plug against metal surface not a good way to test for spark?
